Day Four

We began our day visiting the skull of St. Catherine of Siena in the Bisilica Di San Dominico. We then walked up and down the very steep streets to the Shell shaped square where they are filiming the new James Bond film. After this we were off to the Tuscan hills, a beautiful ride through the country to the Castello Vicchio Maggio Winery for a wine tasting and fantastic lunch.
We had five different wines during our five course meal. It was wonderful!!!!!
Fr. Reggie performed the renewal of wedding vows for the four couples that are on our trip.
Drove back to Florence and had free time to wander in the city.
Wake up call at 6 am Saturday and off to Assisi at 8am we go.

PICTURES

We know you are all anxious to see pictures and we are working on it. We hope to have the situation resolved soon.

Day 3 - Padua & Florence

Today we started the day with a 5:30 am wake up call, breakfast at 6:30 am and on the bus at 7:30 am off to Padua. It was a very special day as Fr. Brissette celebrated Mass at the Basilica in Padua. It was a very emotional Mass for everyone. After Mass we got to walk through the Basilica and visited St. Anthony's tomb and see his famous tongue that has lasted all the years in tack.

Back on the road again and off to Florence we went. Firenze, as the Italian's call it, is a town very rich in history. Our first stop was the Academy of Fine Arts where we met our tour guide. We then got to see the "David" Michaelangelo's famous statue. We also took a walking tour of the city getting to see the house where Michaelangelo lived and the church where his body is buried. We were finally given a much needed break after the tour. Many relaxed and enjoyed a cold beer or gelato as the more dedicated went shopping for Florence gold.

Now we have checked into the hotel Mediteraneo and have enjoyed a lovely dinner and are getting ready to go to bed as we have a 6 am wake up call in the morning.

Day 2 - Tour of Murano & Burano

Prego (Welcome)
Today we traveled back to old Venice to board our boat taxi to the island of Murano. The home of Venetian glass. This island has over 100 glass blowing factories. We were fortunate to get a tour of one of the factories that produces Murano glass (the best glass in Italy). We got to witness the oldest glass blower on the island (he is 63 and starting blowing glass at the age of 13). He demonstrated how to make a vase and how to make a glass horse. Which all found very fascinating. After our demonstration they let us tour their showrooms and several people purchased some beautiful pieces of original glass.

After our time on Murano we boarded the bus for Burano which is another smaller island off old Venice. This is the home of Italian lace. We saw women making handmade lace which we found fascinating and very meticulous. It was all very beautiful. We were then given free time for shopping on this island and as we boarded the boat is was quite apparent that we did good for the economy of Burano as lots of people had big bags.

Once our shopping on Burano was over it was back on the water taxi for the 40 minute ride to St Mark's Square for a free afternoon of shopping, touring and enjoy the Italian food. One thing you can not miss at St. Mark's Square is the amount of pigeons that are there and the people who welcome the pigeons to stand on them as they outstretch their arms. Even people who don't want the pigeons on them are sometimes surprised as they jump on for a free ride. A few members of our group were caught screaming across the square as this happened to them.

Late afternoon we took the public water taxi to our train to get back to the hotel. This was a free evening.

Buone Sera until tomorrow.
Day 1
Buon giornia and welcome to Fr. Reggie Brissette's Blog of Italy.
Our journey has begun and we are off and running. We arrived in Venice 1/2 hour late and were met by our lovely escort Karin. She is absolutely fabulous and very knowledgeable. We immediately boarded our bus to the Hotel Plaza. Once at the hotel we were told we had to be back in the lobby in 1/2 hour so we would not be late for our walking tour of Old Venice. We took the local train to enter Old Venice as no motorized transportation is allowed in the city. Even bicycles are not allowed the only modes of transportation allowed are boats and walking.
Upon arrival we immediately boarded our boat taxi for St. Mark's Square and our walking tour. As we rode our taxi we were all impressed at the beauty and rich history of this beautifuly city. We had our walking tour of the square and there were hundreds of people there and what seemed like a million pigeons. After our walking tour we got a quick break to grab a sandwich or gelato and then off we went for our gondola ride. The gondolas only hold 6 people so off we went on our 45 minute gondola ride through the Grand Canal. It was an experience no one should miss in Venice.
After our gondola rides off to the water taxi we went to get to the train to get back to our hotel for dinner. We got back to the hotel and sat down for our
3 course meal consisting of linguine bolognese, breaded pork with potatoes, salad and fruit tarte.
Plus we can not forget the wine and there was plenty going around. So as you see we enjoyed our first day very much and we were all definitely ready for a good nights sleep.
